CBT for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
At TrueNorth, we use a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) designed specifically for Body Dysmorphic Disorder. This approach helps you change the unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that keep BDD going — and replace them with tools that promote acceptance, confidence, and freedom.
Here’s how it works:

  • Understanding the Cycle
Together, we map out how your BDD operates — identifying the thoughts, feelings, and rituals (like mirror checking, camouflaging, comparing, or reassurance-seeking) that keep you stuck in anxiety and self-doubt.

  • Cognitive Restructuring
You’ll learn how to question and reframe distorted appearance beliefs (“Everyone notices my flaw,” “I can’t leave the house unless I look perfect”) and replace them with more balanced, compassionate thoughts.

  • Behavioral Work & Exposure
Using gradual, evidence-based exposure, you’ll practice facing situations you’ve been avoiding — like looking in a mirror, taking a photo, or going out without covering up. Over time, the anxiety fades and confidence grows.

  • Building Self-Compassion & Identity Beyond Appearance
We help you reconnect with who you are beyond how you look. This includes mindfulness, values-based living, and learning to treat yourself with the same kindness you’d offer someone else.

  • Relapse Prevention & Long-Term Skills
You’ll leave treatment with a personalized plan for recognizing early warning signs, maintaining progress, and continuing to live according to your values — not your appearance fears.

Our goal: to help you see yourself more clearly, live more fully, and stop letting BDD define you.

How We Help You Heal

When your reflection becomes the enemy, life gets smaller.

  • You spend hours a day checking or avoiding mirrors.

  • You fixate on flaws others don’t see — but to you, they feel unbearable.

  • You’ve tried reassurance, research, or “fixing it,” but the anxiety always comes back.

  • You might avoid photos, social events, or dating altogether.

  • You know it’s not “just vanity” — it’s an obsession that’s taken control

You’re not alone — and this is treatable.

What is Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)?

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is an anxiety-related condition where a person becomes intensely preoccupied with perceived flaws in their appearance — often minor or invisible to others.
These intrusive thoughts can lead to repetitive behaviors like mirror checking, camouflaging, excessive grooming, comparing, or seeking reassurance.

Left untreated, BDD can cause severe distress, avoidance, and depression.
But the good news? With the right treatment  — people can reclaim their confidence, peace, and freedom.
